Snow change in north-east weather

by Philippa Gerrard

Winter is showing no signs of leaving the north-east, forecasters today revealed.

The cold bite is expected to last right through into next week, with snow showers and gale-force winds on the way.

Met Office forecaster Peter Sloss said: “There is no sign of spring coming yet.

“This weather is looking like it will continue into next week as well.

“However, the prolonged snow of the last few days will just miss us.”

The Met Office have issued a yellow warning for snow today.

Aberdeen was expected to see some snow showers, with the additional possibility of light rainfall over the city.

Western areas of Aboyne and Braemar, which have both recorded 4ins (11cm).

Temperatures today were set to be similar to yesterday’s chill with coastal area Stonehaven, Aberdeen,  Peterhead and Fraserburgh all expected to be around 2C (36F).

Aboyne, which has been battered with snow this week, was predicted to be 1C (34F).

The return of the snow is due on Friday with a sprinkling due across the North-east.

Gale-force winds of up to 50mph are set to blast Aberdeen, Stonehaven and Peterhead.

Huntly and Inverurie will also see around 40mph gusts.

Although temperatures will remain similar to today – Aberdeen and Stonehaven at 2C and Braemar and Huntly at 1C – "wind chill" will make it feel a lot colder.

Mr Sloss said: "We are expecting gale-force winds on Friday, which is going to make it feel a lot colder than the temperatures suggest.

"Snow showers will affect all areas of the region, but only in the south will we see prolonged showers.
"Those showers should just miss Aberdeenshire."

Tomorrow will be dry with spells of sunshine over Aberdeen.

The city will see highs of 4C (39F), with Aboyne, Braemar and Ballater expected to sit at around 1C.

Peterhead, Fraserburgh and Macduff will feel colder due to wind gusts of 40mph.
