Drivers all across the UK can agree that bus lanes are just too tempting. Let’s face it, we all have important things to do in life and we just don’t have time for traffic.

Take Aberdeen for example. The mere mention of the notorious Haudigan roundabout will bring each and every Aberdonian driver close to tears. There is nothing any driver can do about it. Grin and bear it as they say. But, swearing really does help.
Out of the corner of your eye, you will spot an empty lane. A bus rushes past. Rattling your car as it does so. Again, the lane is empty and best of all: out of bounds. Many of us have experienced the thrill of breaking free of the crowd and pulling into the bus lane with a smug expression. Others follow and the brave ones get home on time for tea. Now, say goodbye to that risk.
Aberdeen City Council are introducing bus lane enforcement in the form of cameras. This means as of Monday the 25th of March, we have to behave. There will be a total of eleven cameras fitted aiming to catch out the lawbreakers. Roads such as King Street, Holburn Street and Great Northern Road will be armed with the cameras. The council hope the new enforcement will help traffic flow and encourage public transport.
So, is it worth the risk? Drivers will be facing a fine of £60, but this can be reduced to £30 if paid within 14 days. This is all dependent on whether you get caught or not. And remember, if you do get caught, don’t forget to smile.
